Mariana Romão (Lisbon, 1994) is a visual artist based in Paris whose work challenges the boundaries of photography by exploring its material and conceptual possibilities. Her practice reimagines photography as a plastic medium, drawing connections to painting and sculpture through experimental processes.
Her approach to photography began during her studies at the Faculdade de Belas-Artes de Lisboa, where she earned a BA in Multimedia Art (2016) and a postgraduate degree in Contemporary Photography Discourses (2017). This foundation was further enriched by her experience working at Diamantino Labo Photo, a traditional photography lab but also as photographer and a light assistant. These roles expanded her technical skills and deepened her understanding of photographic materials and lighting, which she blends with her conceptual explorations to create work that challenges conventional perceptions of photography.
